During a new employee’s first three months they will be required to complete five days of paid workshops.
The Following Topic will be covered In this Training:
1) Introduction to the agency
Objective: To inform new employees of agency’s mission, goals, and services
2) Lifestyle Planning
- To recognize the connection between CET Standards, Agency Policy and Philosophy, and the Lifestyle Planning process
- To understand and demonstrate how Lifestyle Planning approaches are used to assist and empower individuals
- To be able to recognize differences between planning teams and support teams and the role of the facilitator
- To be able to recognize the importance of planning fro opportunities to make or maintain friendships
- To learn language and skills to promote the building of friendships
- To be able to identify the values and beliefs of Lifestyles Planning
3) Abuse Prevention
Work Shop objectives:
- To clarify what constitutes abusive behavior towards individuals in service, and ways they may become aware of.
- To outline what employees are required to do if they become aware or suspect harm to an individual in service may have occurred (e.g. how to interact with individual, remove from harm, report, follow-up)
- Review factors that put individuals with a developmental disability at risk.
- Explore what staff/agencies can do to prevent abuse from occurring. (e.g. inclusion, facilitating friendships, facilitating communication skills)
- Review scenarios to help clarify issues and what measures could be done.
- Review PDD requirements for training, roles and responsibilities
4) Positive approaches and Restrictive practices
- To develop an understanding of “supportive interactions” as an expression of Agency Philosophy, Policy and Procedures, and PDD/AARC Standards.
- To be able to describe “positive approaches”, “positive procedures” and “restrictive procedures” in practice.
- To be able to describe the use of positive and restrictive procedures in addressing unanticipated or anticipated behaviours of concern.
- To learn a framework for ethical decision-making.
- To learn which forms of restrictive procedures are prohibited at Supported Lifestyles
5) Crisis Intervention and Prevention (1.5 days)
- Outline a model of crisis /behavior intervention to keep individuals in service, staff, and others in the environment safe.
- Identify levels of behavior escalation and corresponding staff response for each level
- To examine nonverbal factors that can impact a crisis situation.
- To identify and practice verbal intervention techniques to deescalate a crisis situation.
- Review important factors such as listening skills, teamwork, agency policy around issues such as least restrictive, etc.
- Learn physical safety skills/intervention when an individual becomes physically aggressive. CPI physical restraint techniques are taught as needed (to be used as a last resort).
- Review steps to be done with staff and individuals after a crisis deescalates to facilitate growth, learning and relationship building.
6) Administrative Process Training
Learning Objectives for the Agency Administrative Process:
- Understand why the agency completes orientations.
- Discuss the employee’s responsibility during scheduled work hours and answer any questions people may have.
- Outline Roles and Responsibilities of the direct support position and review the job description.
- Review On-call procedures.
- Review the W-5 of Incident Reporting: who, when, what, where and why.
- Outline documentation requirements (legal documents, communication books, red pen, no pencil and no whiteout, how to address documentation mistakes )
- Discuss confidentiality.
- Review and practice filling out a timesheet and expense claim with the required coding.
- Review timelines for CPR and First Aid.
7) Medication Administration
This in an 8 hour interactive training course designed to provide and update Agency staff members with knowledge and skills to provide safe and competent medication administration.
In this course you will learn 9 formulations to administer medication:
- Oral (pills, sublingual)
- Transdermal Patches
- Eye (drops, ointment)

Our agency has developed supervisory workshop that helps an individual develop a skill set that compliments their role as a supervisor.

- Scheduling and timesheet review
- Customer Service & working with Families
- Employee Evaluations
